(1904–83), British photographer, born in London; grew up mostly in Germany and Switzerland; studied photography in Switzerland in 1928 and in Paris under Man Ray in 1929; settled in London in 1931 and started his famous documentation of all aspects of British life, from wealth to poverty; work published in several newspapers and magazines as well as in two books, ‘The English and Home' (1936) and ‘A Night in London' (1938); photographed London during World War II air raids; after the war specialized in female nudes, British landscapes, and portraits of artists.
