Roman Catholic institution founded in 1950 and named for St. Robert Bellarmine. It covers 120 acres (49 hectares) in Louisville, Ky. Enrollment consists of roughly 1,800 undergraduates and 600 graduate students, the majority of whom are state residents. Women outnumber men. To accommodate the large number of part-time students, the college conducts many classes in the evening and on weekends. More than three fourths of the full-time faculty hold doctorates. Bellarmine operates on a semester calendar and awards bachelor's and master's degrees. Business, education, and the liberal arts are offered at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additional undergraduate fields include nursing, visual and performing arts, communications, computer science, physical and biological science, social science, and theology. Approximately 30 percent of the undergraduates pursue advanced studies within a year of graduation. Campus housing primarily serves freshmen and sophomores. Extracurricular activities include musical and theatrical groups, a fraternity, a student-run newspaper, academic and career-related clubs, and intramural sports. Varsity sports teams compete in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. |
