noncompetitive undergraduate institution covering some 13 acres (5 hectares) in Haviland, Kan. It has been associated with the Society of Friends (Quakers) since its establishment in 1892 as Friends Haviland Academy, which became Kansas Central Bible Training School in 1917 and then Friends Bible College in 1930. In 1990 the college was renamed to honor Quaker theologian Robert Barclay. Enrollment consists of more than 100 students, about 40 percent of whom are state residents. The numbers of men and women attending are relatively equal. Approximately a quarter of the students are over the age of 25. The college awards degrees within disciplines such as religious studies, business, and education. About a third of the full-time faculty hold terminal degrees. The college also employs many part-time instructors. Roughly half of the students reside in campus housing. Extracurricular activities include musical and theatrical groups, a pep club, and intramural sports. Varsity sports teams compete in the National Small College Athletic Association. |
