public institution located on 250 acres (100 hectares) in Savannah, Ga. It was founded in 1935 and awards associate and bachelor's degrees. Enrollment is more than 5,000 students, most of whom are state residents. Women greatly outnumber men. About half of the students attend part-time. A small amount of campus housing is available, with freshmen given priority. More than half of Armstrong State's full-time faculty hold doctorates. The academic calendar is divided into quarters. Areas of study include liberal arts and sciences, computer science, criminal justice, fine arts, industrial arts, public administration, nursing and other health professions, and education. A five-year engineering program is offered in conjunction with Georgia Institute of Technology. Off-campus study opportunities are available at various other colleges in Georgia. Extracurricular activities at the college include fraternities and sororities, choir, and intramural sports. Varsity sports teams compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. |
