damaging fly (Rhagoletis pomonella) of fruit fly family, Tephritidae; orange head with bright red eyes; shiny, black to tan body with yellow-white lines on abdomen and thorax; yellow or gray legs; black, F-shaped bands with curving tails on wings; grows to 0.25 in. (6 mm) long; ranges from Nova Scotia to Florida, west to Texas, and north to Alberta, Canada; adults insert eggs into apples, then wormlike larvae (sometimes called railroad worms) make long, winding trails under apple's skin; trail leaves brown stain or small depression visible through skin; larvae tunnel out of fruit, drop to ground, pupate and overwinter in soil, and adults emerge in July.
