It is affiliated with the Seventh-Day Adventist church and named to honor John Nevin Andrews, the denomination's first official overseas missionary. About two thirds of the full-time faculty hold doctorates. Andrews operates on a quarter calendar and awards associate through doctoral degrees. Disciplines offered include liberal arts and sciences, business, education, communications, computer and information sciences, visual and performing arts, nursing and other health sciences, theology, social work, agricultural sciences, architecture, technological careers, home economics, construction, aviation, industrial arts, physical fitness, and speech pathology. About a quarter of the undergraduates pursue advanced studies within a year of graduation.

Enrollment consists of approximately 2,000 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students, drawn from across the United States and several foreign countries. The numbers of men and women attending are relatively equal. About a quarter of the undergraduates are over the age of 25. Traditional-age students who do not live with relatives must reside in campus housing. Some students work part-time in enterprises owned by the university, including a shopping center, a dairy farm, and a printing plant. Extracurricular activities at Andrews include intramural sports, a campus radio station, musical groups, and a student-run newspaper.
