(1894–1955), U.S. public official and labor leader, born in Chicago, Ill.; joined steamfitters union; U.S. Army in World War I, following which he held several labor jobs, including assistant business agent for the steamfitters 1921–33, Illinois state director of labor 1933–41, president of International Association of Government Labor Officials 1933–55, president of steamfitters 1943–53; secretary of labor in President Eisenhower's 1st Cabinet 1953, until resignation over Taft-Hartley Act.
