city, northern suburb of Detroit, Macomb county, southeastern Michigan, U.S. Organized in 1837 as Hickory township, it was called Aba (or Alba, 1838) until renamed (1839) for General Joseph Warren, a hero of the U.S. War of Independence. The village of Warren was incorporated in 1893; the city was created in 1955 through the consolidation of the village and township. Warren formerly encompassed Center Line, now an enclave, which seceded from the township in 1925. Industrial and residential development began in the 1920s and was greatly accelerated in the early decades after World War II. The General Motors Technical Center, the Detroit Arsenal, and the South Campus of Macomb Community College (1954) are in the city. Pop. (1990) 144,864; (1994 est.) 142,625.
