Arabic-language cable news television network founded by the emir of Qatar in 1996. It was transmitted from Doha, Qatar, and from bureaus around the world, beginning continuous programming in 1999. Al-Jazeera provided a mix of news, talk shows, and educational programs, and its editorial freedom was unique in the Middle East. The network's detractors maintained that it fulminated rather than informed, and its broadcasts were sometimes blocked by other Arab countries. Proponents pointed out that it was the only form of free press in the region and that it gave news to the Arab audience not offered by state-run media.
